Oil Caps Get Nipped by Wolverines

The Virden Oil Capitals fell 3-2 to the visiting Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Tuesday night to snap their mini three-game win streak.

The first period went scoreless until Johl Swedlo put the Wolverines on the board with six seconds to play in the opening frame. Devan Schram knotted things up at 1-1 in the second period on a feed from Cody Durdle and Ben Williams. For Durdle, it was his first point as an Oil Cap who was making his debut tonight with his new club.

The third period saw the Wolverines regain their lead on a goal from Neil Woolfrey. It wasn’t until the 4:10 mark of the period that Soren Frederiksen tied the game back up with his 23rd of the season.

Just when it looked like the game would be heading to overtime, the Wolverines got in on the attack and shoved one past Sean Kuehn to restore their lead with 1:19 to play. The Oil Caps pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but couldn’t generate any chances as the Wolverines took this one by a final score of 3-2.

Virden finished the night with 28 shots while the Wolverines had 27 to their name. Kuehn gets pegged with the loss in goal, making 24 saves on the night.

The Oil Caps will enter game four of their five-game home stand on Friday night when the Winkler Flyers return to Tundra Oil & Gas Place. It’s the Oil Caps Souvenir Poster Night courtesy of Cathedral Energy Services, DB Higginbotham Electrical, Corex Resources, and Sunrise Credit Union. Game time is slated for 7:30.
