Monday’s afternoon game was an unforgettable day for the Virden Oil Capitals and their loyal fans. The team hit the ice in Special Edition 3rd Jerseys, adding an extra layer of excitement to the already intense action. These unique jerseys were auctioned off at the end of the night, giving fans a chance to take home a piece of the game. To top it off, it was Hockey Card Night, where the Oil Caps signed hockey cards for fans after the game, making it a night full of memorable moments both on and off the ice.
The designer of the jerseys Brooks Freeman had this to say when asked about how the jerseys came to be “These special Oil Caps jerseys are designed to be a “fauxback” style. Basically a “what if” the Oil Capitals were a team in the 1920’s or 30’s. The logo and jersey design are based off of multiple hockey designs from that era with a simplistic logo and lots of stripes on the body and arms of the jersey. The cream off white color helps bring across the vintage aesthetic as well. The oil drops on the outside of the logo are a call back to the old look of the Virden Oil Kings senior team and minor hockey programs in Virden.“
These jerseys hold deep meaning for the Virden community, as they pay homage to the town’s rich hockey history and local heritage. By incorporating elements from the Virden Oil Kings and minor hockey program, they celebrate the strong legacy of the sport in the community, reminding fans of the generations of players and supporters who have helped shape the team’s identity.
